Hallmark: Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

Hallmark Magic Ornament

Overall Impression: Cute snowmen bring a magic audio greeting

  • Nice: Ten-second personal audio message to surprise a gift recipient.
  • Naughty: Audio recording quality could be improved.

This handcrafted Hallmark Keepsake Magic ornament depicts three snowmen at the base of a impressive tree. The tree is topped by a star inscribed with the year 2009.  The model was crafted by longtime Hallmark artist Anita Marra Rogers. Ten seconds of recordable audio make this ornament unique. The legend on the box reads: “Make a special Christmas memory by recording a personal message. Your message will play after the song “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” is heard.” Out of the box, there is a pre-loaded example message. A small child’s voice says: “Hi Grandma and Grandpa. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I miss you and I love you sooo much.”

Instructions are provided on the box for recording you own message, which erases the pre-loaded example. You slide the RECORD switch to the unlock position and then press and hold the record button; a light indicates that the ornament is recording. A label on the ornament warns that you should wait a few seconds before beginning your message. The record switch must be kept in the lock position to save the message; battery removal does not destroy the recording, however.

Our tests with the ornament showed that while it worked as advertised, the sound quality of the recording was noticeably inferior to that of the pre-loaded sample. We tried the recording at different distances from the microphone without any improvement in the quality. The recording was recognizable but somewhat fuzzy and raspy.

The ornament is about 4 inches tall.

This ornament is item #QSR4542 and retailed for $20.00 in the U.S.
