Overall Impression: Authentic model of a Mikado steam locomotive.

  • Nice: Another supremely detailed engine model.
  • Naughty: Red and green scheme without a roadname.

This is a very accurate diecast model of a red 2-8-2 Mikado-type steam locomotive. These engines, also known as Mikes, were widely used in the U.S. as freight locomotives.  This is the fourteenth in the Lionel Trains locomotive series. Like earlier Hallmark ornaments, this engine approximates N-scale size (about 1:160 scale), and is a very accurate model. Earlier in the series, the engines usually had a prototypically correct roadname; for this version, a generic Holiday Red style is represented.

The ornament is about 3 3/4 inches long. The box description reads: “Its two small rear wheels, eight drivers, and two small front wheels give it extra space for a large firebox and lots of power – just what’s needed for hauling this year’s presents to eagerly waiting children.”

This ornament is item #QX8602 and retailed for $18.50 in the U.S.
