Canadian Grants for Better Christmas Trees

The Canadian Government’s Atlantic Innovation Fund has awarded $5 million in research and development grants for a Smart Christmas Trees and Technology Initiative. According to an article by Bruce Erskine of the Chronicle Herald newspaper, the project will award money to the Nova Scotia Agricultural College to develop trees with better needle retention. The five-year initiative hopes to produce a longer-lasting Balsam fir tree. There is no word on whether any breakthroughs in tree technology will be shared with Canada’s friends in the lower 48.
